My Second Skin
Artboard 1-100.jpg

The project “My Second Skin” began with a curiosity about how my skin would change when I grow old.
I drew inspiration from Korea's skincare culture to develop this project.

Artboard 10-100.jpg

Koreans invest a lot of time and money into their skin.
When they age, their skin sags, and their breasts and hips droop due to changes in the skin.
I focused on their desire to lift these areas back to how they were when they were younger.

[Textile Development -1]

1. To represent aged skin and youthful skin, I developed textiles using a bio material, gelatin.

2. I recreated the details of age spots commonly seen on elderly skin using natural powders.

3. For the changes in hair color often observed among East Asians, I developed textiles using wool.

I analyzed trends in Korean skincare and found inspiration in Korean massage.
I focused on the shapes formed when skin is lifted by massages, the various postures of massage therapists, and the phenomenon of wrinkles being stretched and lifted during the process.

[3D Silhouette Development]
I developed designs through draping to express the folds and sagging skin resulting from massage.

[Textile Development -2]
Aging skin constantly strives to renew itself.
In our daily habits, we frequently see pigmentation in areas where the skin folds repeatedly.
I applied these features as details and material elements, developing textiles using bio materials and latex.

Final Design Lineup

Artboard 14-100.jpg

Look 1.

[3D Silhouette Development]

1. Top: I drew inspiration from the crossed arms and fingers of massage therapists.
I performed massages directly on a mannequin and applied fabric twists to mimic the areas being massaged.

2. Skirt: I developed the directional texture and lifted silhouette formed during massages.

3. Scarf: Inspired by the sagging silhouette under an elderly person’s chin, I expressed this in the design.

[Textile Development]

1. Developed using latex and fabric.

2. The flow and texture of massage were expressed using leaf patterns.

3. Details & Accessories: I represented the age spots on cheekbones using beads and created eyebrows using wool.

[Color]
Latex hardens into a yellow hue over time, which reminded me of East Asian skin tones.
I used latex resembling East Asian skin and lemon-colored fabrics to more directly express the essence of East Asian skin.

Look 2.

[3D Silhouette Development]

1. Top: Inspired by the twists of a therapist's arms, I created a jacket.

2. Skirt: I incorporated twist details inspired by the placement of stones during stone massages.

3. Skirt & Shoes: Hair falling during a massage was expressed using wool, combined with the developed fabric to create these designs.

4. Bag: The silhouette of a therapist’s hand during a back massage inspired this design.
I developed a 2-way bag that functions as a sleeve bag, hip bag, and tote bag.

[Textile Development]
Flowers: I was inspired by the marks left by cupping, which resembled blooming flowers.
I combined these marks with latex material samples and floral motifs.

[Color]
I was inspired by the idea of reversing the appearance of aging skin to make it look younger.
I used the blue tone that emerges when skin color is inverted as a source of inspiration.

My own private space

The project, titled "My Own Private Space", defines a personal space where I focus on the relationship with myself through the context of the bathroom.

I have incorporated my experiences into the project by episodically narrating them.

[Device Development]

1. Protect your buttocks!: Since childhood until now, I occasionally experienced trauma from falling into a toilet with the seat up.

To alleviate this trauma, I have developed imaginary support devices to prevent falling into the toilet.

2. I used to adopt a peculiar posture for bowel movements in public restrooms since childhood.

Therefore, I have developed two devices that provide stability for two different postures.

[3D Pattern Development]

Accordion Pattern: Inspired by a collapsible water container, I developed my own pattern through three stages in the toilet airbag.

[Textile Development]

Mold and Water: I developed a textile imagining molds growing in the toilet drainage turning into sprouts and mold flowers to welcome me.

I used silicone, ink, and landscaping materials.

Final Design Line Up.

Look 1.

[3D Pattern Deveilopment]

1. Accordion Pattern: Using the developed accordion pattern, I designed airbag pants to protect from the buttocks to the feet.

2. Top: Inspired by the accordion airbag and the silhouette of pants pleats, I developed sleeves through 3D patterns and draping.

I expressed a refreshing emotion and molds sprouting from the soil in ultramarine, olive, and dark brown colors.

3. Pants: Developed with 3D patterns, creating a unique silhouette.

[3D Silhouette Deveilopment]

Toilet Outerwear: Taking inspiration from various toilet silhouettes, I designed an outerwear that gives the impression of being deeply immersed in the toilet.

[Device Development]

1. Personal Space Device-1: I created a curtain-like structure using transparent pipes, PVC, chains, and O-rings. On top of it,

I expressed different colors and silhouettes of mold flowers and water for each layer of the personal space.

2. Personal Space Device-2: I crafted a three-stage acrylic panel that allows me to confront my primal self in the personal space.

Using silicone and landscaping materials, I created different colors and shapes for each acrylic layer.

Look 2.

[3D Pattern Deveilopment]

1. Sleeves: Inspired by the pleats of pants, I developed sleeves.

2. Bag: Simplifying the form of wrinkling pants during bowel movements, I developed a 2-way bag.

[Textile Development]

1. Top: I drew inspiration from the silhouette resembling splashing water and the color of elbow marks on the knees, using silicone and ink for development.

2. Pants wrinkles and Lacquers: Inspired by the swirling patterns of pants pleats and toilet water, I used lacquers for development.

3. Printing: I printed the elements of the toilet collaged together.

Look 3.

When falling into the toilet, I imagined a dramatic form of water splashing and used air mesh for development.

[3D Silhouette Deveilopment]

I created the clothes by applying 2D patterns and draping with air mesh.

[Textile Development]

1. When falling into the toilet, the silhouette of water splashing appeared as if dancing.

I connected air mesh resembling toilet tiles between mesh fabrics, using silicone, ink, and landscaping materials to develop the textile.

2. Inspired by the appearance of shed snake skin when clothes are removed, I expressed snake skin as a textile.

[Accessory Development]

Headpiece: Inspired by the direction in which water splashes towards the face, I developed my own seam line using PVC fabric, silicone, and landscaping materials.

The bathroom is the only private space where I can contemplate and accept everything about myself.

It's a space where I confront my true self and where my reflections merge with the space.

It is the only space that accommodates me even when I indulge in excesses like drinking and vomiting.

To conceal sounds, I turn on the sink water as much as possible, creating a space where I can release hidden, melancholic emotions.

My most precious apotropaic objects

"My Most Precious Apotropaic Objects" Project: This project focuses on six objects that protect me from malevolence and explores asymmetry and distortions in my body derived from a butterfly ring.

I always carry a gemstone received as a gift when I lived alone in Jeju Island. I imagine the household deities of Jeju Island, nestled in the gemstone, protecting me like a warm grandmother's house, providing a sense of comfort.

My grandmother gifted me a handmade frame bag and a jade ring.

The experiences of hiking with her warm touch in my childhood continue to protect and guide me on the right path.

My mother used her first adult paycheck to buy a watch, gifting it to me. The watch holds the joyful emotions and memories of my youth.

When I feel down, my mother's watch helps me escape the sadness through the happy memories it carries.

In Korean folklore, there is a myth of "Samjae," a cycle of disasters returning every nine years.

The traditional Korean amulet, Soko Ture, protects me from Samjae.

I have worn a butterfly ring on my left thumb for about five years, creating asymmetry between both thumbs.

I focused on my transformed and asymmetric body due to external elements and habits that uplift me.

I have a habit of hunching my shoulders when concentrating. This posture pours out my beauty, inspired by the butterfly ring, expressed through drawings and collages.

I reinterpreted the items and created a design based on the silhouette I drew.

[Textile Development]

1. To express the form of a butterfly pouring out my beauty and the jade ring on the skirt, I used plastic clay, alcohol ink, and mother-of-pearl.

2. Inspired by gemstones, I utilized resin to develop textiles.

Final Design Line Up.

Look1

[3D Pattern, Silhouette Development]

1. I placed a frame around both shoulders and waist, resembling my grandmother's gentle patting on the shoulders.

The frame entrance on the shoulders is designed towards the head, allowing the good energy inside the bag to reach me.

I developed a form where the frame and coat overlap.

2. Inspired by the silhouette of a butterfly reinterpreted from the front opening and back slit of the coat using 3D program work.

[Textile Development]

I developed it using bag's method of construction such as reinforcement, edge coat, and base coat.

Look2

[3D Pattern, Silhouette Development]

1. Hunched Shoulder Form: Expressing the bold posture blocking malicious entities and uplifting myself through a 3D pattern.

I expressed a deformed thumb silhouette with the design on the lower part of the outerwear.

2. Skirt: Created a silhouette reinterpreted from the jade ring using 3D patterns. Designed the skirt by simplifying the silhouette of my mother's watch.

[Textile Development]

Inspired by the glass and colors of my mother's watch, I used glasses and plastic clay, alcohol ink, and mother-of-pearl to create a facemask.

[Look 1,2-Textile Development]

1. To express the form of a butterfly pouring out my beauty and the jade ring on the skirt, I used plastic clay, alcohol ink, and mother-of-pearl.

2. Inspired by the stitched textile of my grandmother's bag. Used thread, alcohol ink, and mother-of-pearl.

3. Inspired by the texture of gemstones and the color of my grandmother's traces.

Developed textiles using glue, resin, alcohol ink, and mother-of-pearl.

[3D Program Work / Printing Develment]

1. I designed a reinterpreted collage using apotropaic objects with 3D program work.

2. I printed a nude-colored top and a 20D stocking fabric and expressed it as if it were protecting my whole body.

I speak that life is a gap.

"I Speak that Life is a Gap" Project is inspired by every gap that has been casually overlooked.

Gaps connect things, form between objects, emerge between people, and connect me to myself and to other things.

I define gaps in three areas: the everyday gaps experienced everywhere and every moment,

the gaps in yoga movements and the body connecting me to myself and to other things,

and the freedom area of embracing life's imperfections.

Final Design Line Up.

Look 1. Gaps in everyday life.

Inspired by asphalt vents commonly seen in daily life, particularly at Ando Tadao's exhibition space Museum SAN in Korea.

1. Padded Outer: Designed in a rectangular shape of the asphalt vent wall and a shape in which the human body is irregularly tightened.

2. Body Suit: The inner part of a black body suit was made so that the gaps were clearly visible.

3. Headpiece: It represents looking at and facing the world through a gap.

Mesh fabric was used to express countless gaps, and elastic bands were used to experiment with silhouettes.
Inspired by the tightened shape of the human body, a donut-shaped tightened ring was created and placed on the headpiece.

Look 2. Gaps of the body.

I was inspired by the gaps in the human body shown in the movements of Ashtanga yoga,

which allow me to control and examine my selfishness and face my ego and essence.
We focused on the gaps in the hands, fingers, and Ashtanga yoga movements that the human body can directly express.

1. Bodysuit: I tied the developed 3D sample with rubber bands of various colors inspired by the color of the human body to express controlling

and reflecting on my selfishness through draping.

2. Bag: By draping the 3D sample on my body, I developed a bag that can be created in
various ways, such as a hand-shaped cross body with 10 fingers attached to the palm and a backpack.

3. Foot poetry: Foot poetry was created using hand and finger samples.

[3D Sample, Textile Development]

1. Hands and fingers -1: Inspired by fingers caught in door and window frames.
Wrinkles were expressed by gathering the lines on the palm, and cotton was added inside to give a three-dimensional effect.
We developed a hand-stitched textile that expresses finger wrinkles and fingernails using two types of thread.
2. Human body -1: Inspired by the form of Ashtanga yoga movement, the shape was simplified and made using gathers and cotton.

Look 3. Gaps in the realm of freedom.

This is a free area where the imperfections of life are accepted as they are.

I found myself weighed down by reality, and discovered a world full of many useful things.

[3D Sample, Textile Development]

1. Sample1: In the realm of freedom, the imperfection of life is expressed through the irregular tightening of the human body,

and was inspired by the movements of Ashtanga yoga.
I was inspired by the pain I felt as if my finger cells were being torn apart when I got caught in door and window frames.
We developed this sense by cutting fabric of various colors and dividing it into pieces.

2. Sample2: I was inspired by facing the self and essence through the gaps in the movements of Ashtanga yoga.
The silhouette and color of the human body were simplified and divided, and the height of the gap was varied using cotton,

and the depth of the gap was expressed differently.

[3D Silhouette Development]

1. Top: Using 3D draping, I designed my own top with a straight gap.
Intertwined fingers were draped from the sleeves to the end of the back to represent the harmony of the gaps in the free area.

2. Skirt: A large round skirt that represents the world I think of.
The useful world filled with countless things was expressed in a form filled with protruding irregular shapes using gathers.
I created a simplified version of my face, which is weighed down by reality, and divided the gap between the hands

that cover it into a three-dimensional part and a two-dimensional part.

Possessiveness; Stay in my territory

"Possessiveness; Stay in my territory" is a project that focuses on the relationship between distance and proximity.
Shakyamuni said, ‘Everything is created by the combination of cause and effect, and disappears when cause and effect disperse.’ I visualized it as an atmosphere.
Through interviews with people around my age, I learned that most people have feelings of regret and a desire to hold on to relationships that have become distant.

I interpreted their desire as possessiveness and translated this into their territory.

Look 1.

Through collage, I created another area and expressed the silhouette of the people in the area feeling comfortable. Additionally, their mood was expressed in various colors through the wrinkle-like atmosphere.

This was made using organza material using the flounce technique and combining various colors.

The area of the ties was made using pvc, and the waist belt was made using a 2D pattern.

Look 2.

Through collage, I showed the gradually growing distances spreading and flowing, like low and high pressures in the climate.

Outside of the area, there is a red atmosphere that symbolizes a warning, and the appearance of wanting to hold on to relationships that go outside of my area is expressed with a black line.

Look 3.

This was designed with the desire to confine the red atmosphere back into the area and completely prevent my connections from leaving.

The coat was designed using PVC to create a dome that traps the red atmosphere.

The silhouette of the dome was placed on both sides of the waist, with the red atmosphere in the center and the atmosphere in the area above and below.

Look 4.

It expressed the confusion of spaces within the area mixing together like a tornado due to connections trying to go outside the area.

Look 5.

I collaged an imaginary fortress inside the territory where people could not leave.
This place uses fences and warning signs to block people trying to leave the area.
When ties go out of bounds, strings are used to express the possessiveness that binds them.

This is Possessiveness; Stay in my territory's final lookbook.
